so january has come and gone and new years resolutions have all but failed inevitably. why is it that we make these commitments to ourselves that are incredibly lofty, & quite realistically, rather unachievable? we set our eyes to the result, yet foolishly neglect the steps to reach the height of these possibilities. we have failed to break down these broad enigmas into attainable pieces we can more readily grasp. i too have fallen victim to this.
such lofty resolutions i began 2011 with. be a better person. be a loving wife who respects my husband unconditionally. deepen my relationship with Christ. be a better friend. be a better behavior analyst. laugh more. eat healthier. exercise more. loose 15 pounds. read more. expand my intellectual endeavors. take a stance on controversial issues. laugh more. conserve my resources better. in general, live more simply.
pretty easy, right? so as we are so close to entering only the third month of this new year, how is that i find myself failing in every possible resolution?
set a resolution and then give up at the first sign of failure? as though this lapse in commitment has prevented me from future success. how ignorant can i be? it is but a stumble on the pathway to greatness. how would life look if at each stumble in our commitment to Christ we threw in the towel? our goal is perfection. the unreachable. and yet each day we fail, and each day we are forgiven to try anew the next. what a perfect example of what daily life should be. a mirror of our life in Him…
so on this day i plan to start anew. to begin with steps towards the greater goals in mind. to achieve but if for just this day alone. today i will.
if just for today, i will speak words of kindness to those around me. if just for today, i will be slow to anger. if just for today, i will show my husband how much i love him with more than words. if just for today, i will pour into His word. if just for today, i will talk to a friend i don’t see every day. if just for today, i will use my resources more wisely. if just for today, i will laugh. if just for today, i will eat healthier. if just for today, i will learn something new. if just for today, i will catch up on current events. if just for today, i will be proud of who i am. if just for today, i will stand up for what i believe. if just for today, i will be positive. if just for today, i will live the simple life.
