hooray for earth day!

today is we celebrate the earth and the idea of a healthy & sustainable planet.  the history of the day dates back to the environmental movement that started in the 70’s and has evolved over the years.  in our day there are several things to do to go green & join the cause, not just on this one day, but every one of the year.   Real Simple has some great ideas for easy ways to go green which are worth checking out. here are just a few that i’ve found quite realistic in going green:

you might remember a previous post, being green made simple , but this is by far one of the easiest ways to save the environment. just keep a few handy in your purse or car and you’ll never have to worry. and most places give you a discount too!

another simple way to use reusable items is to use a travel mug for coffee & tea and a water-bottle during the day.  here are my two favorites.  again, some coffee shops will give you a discount when you bring your own mug & today at Starbucks if you bring it in they will give you free coffee or tea! (which you better believe I’ve already taken advantage of)  as for water bottles i live by my CamelBak for the work day (the straw makes it much easier to avoid spills around the kiddos) and my trusty Auburn Nalgene for outdoor adventures (that i’ve had since freshman year of college & has faithfully traveled with me to camps & numerous countries – talk about durability).

another way to save some energy is to use a french press instead of the coffee maker in the mornings for that hit of caffeine.  i love my french press (especially with freshly ground beans) and it really takes no time at all.  and if you’re really hardcore, like one friend of mine, you can go completely without electricty. needless to say i’m impressed with his skills.

other easy ways to go green are to recycle (you’d be amazed at what you can recycle – check out these facts), bike or walk where you need to go (we always walk to church unless it’s raining b/c it’s so close. it’s a fun little trek and a great time for conversation before & reflection after the service), skip the hairdryer & let your hair air dry, buy organic, and opt for candles when you can! and getting creative makes it more fun!
