So these past two weeks I have been driving to Choctaw County, AL to do some consulting at a school there as the start to my new position at work. A multitude of events have transpired during these past 14 days. Here is but a sampling of these happenings during this driving extravaganza:
Listened to a lot of great new music and great finds recently. Additionally, I’ve found out just how much I am obsessed with Mumford and Sons. Especially The Cave. Brilliant.
If ever there was any doubt that I have terrible luck with cars this past week solidified it. A logging truck popped something up on the winding two way road and cracked windshield on the rental car. Then in the middle weekend of my adventure, my honda wouldn’t turn back on after I parked it. After jumping it off, twice, we got a new battery & a battery fuse & all was well after we made the 3 hour trip to Auburn with little certainty the car was going to survive the trek. (On a side note, the reasoning for traveling to Auburn was because my brother was just pinned as Staff Sergeant!! So very proud of Bradley 🙂 More on this, and the fun filled weekend that ensued, to come in a later post.)
At the beginning of the week, I reentered the world of sermons I had left behind on the weary ride to Tallassee during grad school. I opted for an old favorite & listened to some great David Platt sermons. Specifically two from last year,
“Giving In The History Of Redemption” and “Walking In Wisdom”. You can find the podcast for the Church of Brook Hills on iTunes…
As I have fallen in love with my Kindle, I decided to test out some of the features. An automated and choppy voice read a few chapters of the Life of Pi (on the list of 100 I posted previously) to me before I opted for something a little louder, and more fluid, to occupy my time. And this is when a new love was born. I ventured to the Mobile Public Library, an eventful experience all it’s own, obtained a card, and explored the world of audio books I had long ago discarded to those unwilling or unable to dive into the paper bound bliss that pulls me from this world to another. I began with The Kite Runner, also on the list of 100. I was utterly captivated and deeply moved by this story. I recommend it completely. And actually in the audio book as it was read by the author. After completion of this great novel, several random CD mixes and a few sermons, I listened to another audio book. This time I chose Having a Mary Spirit. Though I generally prefer to take notes and highlight/underline while I read anything in this category of literature, still a good book with a great deal of valuable points. Though I found the weakness for me in the world of audio books, and perhaps my hesitation all along.
Another novelty during this time was my ability to eat lunch free of children. I ate a chunky peanut putter sandwich every day to make up for the inability to do so at the school for the past year due to allergies of a couple of the kids. And it was delicious. Though I must admit, I do this almost every year. For one week I eat nothing but peanut butter sandwiches and drink water for lunch (normally on mission trips, however) and then I’m set on this meal for about 356 days until the binge occurs again.
All in all, the consulting went great. The driving was productive in sense. And ultimately, a lot of soul searching, pondering, and prayer filled the many hours behind the wheel.
