To start you off, a bit of the lyrics of a highly overplayed but extremely popular song occupying the radio waves currently. FOSTER THE PEOPLE- Pumped Up Kicks lyrics:
“All the other kids with the pumped up kicks you’d better run, better run, outrun my gun. All the other kids with the pumped up kicks you’d better run, better run, faster than my bullet.”
Now you may wonder what any of this has to do with a puppy. Trust me I will explain. Two weeks ago, I was on my way from the group houses to the main office for work and was in desperate need of some caffeine. So I stopped at a gas station and on my way back out to my car, this man was leaving from near the newspaper stand rather in a hurry. He was quite the sketchy man, scurrying away quickly in his car and speeding out of the parking lot. It being just after 8am, I merely thought him a bit strange and perhaps late for work, however the whole situation still seemed a bit curious. As I was getting into my car, I heard a strange noise. I must admit I was perplexed because it sound rather like a squeaking one might hear from a chicken so I looked around. And that’s when I saw it. There on the ground next to the newspaper stand was a large men’s shoe box. I went over to peek inside to find the box taped shut. Fearing what could be in the box as it shook and whimpered, immediately I wished that I would have gotten the man’s license plate number or a better description of his face, but regrettably he was gone and I had little recollection of a man who now caused me to burn with anger at his thought.
How can people be so horrible? The puppy appeared to be severely malnourished, afflicted with worms, and worst still, her fur on her tummy was missing from most likely sitting in her own urine her whole little life. The poor little girl could scarcely even walk straight. So distraught and full of emotion, I took the puppy to work with me, not knowing what to do other than to make sure this little one found a home where she would be loved and cared for. While at work, a coworker helped me bathe her and get her warm. In the midst of all of this, I had called Glenn and we were frantically looking for a place to take our new canine friend and with all of the “no kill” shelters full & no offers from either set of coworkers, our good friend Reneé said that she was going to be able to take the puppy! She made an appointment at the vet & I met her there that afternoon to check out the puppy. She did have worms, and sarcoptic mange (both very common in puppies- especially those with a compromised immune system- and very treatable) but otherwise was very alert & very heathy! She was only 1 /12 pounds & 3 1/2 weeks old so it was hard to say what kind of dog she was going to be, but one thing was for sure, she was adorable.
