Alabama Lifestyle Blog

July 1, 2012 / DIY, life of a BCBA, ramblings, wedding

teaching, stock the bar, and more crafts

I’ve really been quite proud of myself recently as I’ve somewhat managed to maintain a bit of craftiness in my life despite how much busier I have become during the summer months.  What better way to share to than to show the pictures of some of the success! I’ve be describing some of these projects and captivating these items and the recent happenings through a montage of pictures. Feel free to click on the pictures to see a larger version. Enjoy 🙂
The reason I have been so busy this summer is because I have recently begun two new endeavors in the world of employment! I have switched positions within my agency (a VERY long story that thankfully concluded with a happy ending) and I am now a BCBA and a classroom teacher at the day school for children with Autism that I completed my Fellowship at last year. My classroom is comprised of 6 little boys ranging from 6-10 most of which are non-verbal and use a program on the iPad to communicate. At any given time, we have 13 iPads and 2 MacBooks in our classroom…it seriously looks like Apple exploded in the room. I am enjoying embracing my creative side and slowly learning the ways of the world of education.  I am also teaching a course at the University of South Alabama as an Adjunct Instructor for Applied Behavior Analysis III: Advanced Applications for Psychology undergraduates in the ABA program two nights a week. I get to teach something I love and I couldn’t be more excited.  This course has really been a learning experience of what I prefer to do in the field. I am able to do individual and group supervisions again and my USA students do their practicum hours at my school so it really has worked out to be a great situation. I am definitely still growing as an instructor in both avenues, however my level of frustration has diminished more than I could have imagined. I’m quite enjoying work these days 🙂

Earlier this summer before the chaos began, we were able to throw a very exciting soiree!

Two of our dear friends are tying the knot very soon this summer & we couldn’t be more excited for them! In honor of this union we wanted to throw a shower for them down here to celebrate. Thinking outside the box of the traditional nuptial parties, we decided upon a new trend and threw a Stock the Bar shower.
the lovely invitations i was able to create online & even use a coupon for some discounts
the beer cake – alternating between the bride and groom’s favorite brews & tied with ribbon
the full spread for the stock the bar party – using the chrome to mimic the feel of the cans,
utensils/napkins in beer cases & flowers in old wine/beer bottles
old wooden bin filed with the couple’s favorite mixed drinks in mason jars –
the balloons were filled with water & frozen to make “ice balls”
favors for the guests – minis tied with the couple’s wedding date & future monogram

In addition to the shower, the husband and I have keep quite busy with a family vacation to the beach, numerous trips to the flea market and the market on the square downtown. And as per usual, my sweet and loving husband continues to surprise me with little items to show how much he cares. The bright and beautiful flowers below were sent to my school one random day just to make me smile. How did I manage to marry someone so incredible? 🙂

As many of my recent crafting projects have revolved around the wedding, I was finally able to finish yet another one from my list that revolved around this glorious day. I’m  quite thrilled with the final product as this was by far the simplest project I have completed. All I needed was the frame, which I found at Target for relatively inexpensive. I wanted a place to display our save the date, invitation and program instead of just keeping it in a box and after finding some inspiration online, I pulled this together in a jiffy! Now if I could only find a box to display my bouquet that didn’t cost an arm & a leg…

our program (both the outside – the front & our letter to friends & family from the back & the inside),
our save the date, and invitation. i added the date in blue to bring in some color to it as well.

You're not still doing adjunct work at South are you?

…I feel as though we've already talked about this before, but I'm a little scatter-brained today. lol.
