Burlap iPad Case | DIY

One of our favorite gifts this Christmas was a wireless keyboard for our iPad from my brother. We were already pretty much obsessed with our iPad, but now it’s even more versatile! I love being able to take the iPad with me to a coffee shop in leu of my actual laptop, but it’s rather annoying difficult to type for very long on the on screen keyboard, so this has been a perfect addition. The keyboard attaches to be a cover, so we can’t use our current cover/back with it on. Which is perfectly fine, however, since we sort of switch back and forth, but we wanted a place to keep things together and be able to transport everything at once. So since I needed a case for our iPad now that we have an extra “part” of it, I went on a search! Most iPad cases are pretty snug and have only one “pocket” to hold the iPad, most times hardly big enough to fit one with a case. Also, for anything that doesn’t look like Vera Bradley exploded on it, it was super pricey. So to appease the husband’s desire for something a bit more manly in case he wanted to tote it around, I opted to make my own case… totally for free!

It was actually much easier than I thought!  I used leftover burlap I had around and some bright green thread for some contrast & to make it a bit more fun. I wasn’t planning on blogging about it (slash didn’t know it would turn out so well!), so I didn’t end up taking a picture of every step, but here’s a quick guide of how to make one for yourself:

Burlap iPad Case | DIY
1.         Place your items (iPad, keyboard, etc) on the burlap (or really whatever fabric you want) and fold over fabric to cover (like wrapping a gift!)
2.         Cut out fabric – Leave about one inch on each of the 3 non fold sides
3.         (I did a double layer of the burlap to make it sturdy)
4.         Sew the two open sides together, leaving the folded end at the bottom & the top open
5.         Cut a small piece of fabric to make the flap – needs to be as wide as your “case” but really as long as you want it to be when you fold it over
6.         Sew one end of the flap down near the top of the back (about 1 in down)
7.         Fold over flap & sew button near the bottom of the “front” end of the flap
8.         On the front of the case just below the end of the flap, sew on a small hair-tie (or ribbon) to hold the button in place when the flap is closed (you could reverse the placement of the button & the hair-tie too)
*optional: I lined my case with some old fleeces pj pants legs I was donating to create two “pockets” – one for the iPad and one for the keyboard.
To do this:
1.         Cut off both pants legs about 1 / 2 in shorter than your case length
2.         Place on top of each other and sew together the “cut” ends
3.         Push the sewn end down into the case & now you have a two pocket lined case!

And there you have it! It didn’t take me long at all, and I had my little helper to keep me company as always! And now I can venture out into the “real world” and do some blogging over a nice macchiato!
