Be Uniquely You

One of the most unique things about the blogging world is being able to connect with others and share in the lives of some pretty incredible people that become true friends on this journey of life. I’ve met some wonderful ladies and love having the opportunity to introduce them to you as well! One such lady is miss Gayle, and her honest heart for the Lord is what keeps me going back to her blog time and time again. You should stop by her page and especially read her story of hope and the #perfectlyimperfect series. You won’t be disappointed by the genuine truth that always graces her space. I’m excited to have her here today to share with you a bit so keep reading and be sure to leave her some love!

Hey all you :: simply free :: readers!  I’m Gayle, and I blog over at Grace for Gayle. You may or may not have noticed my little ad on Lauren’s side bar this month.  So, I hope you already know who I am. If not, here’s me!

Lauren offered to let me come over and share the my innermost personal thoughts.  So today, I want to talk to you about something that has been on my mind for years. Years, I tell you!
I am a trend setter.
Yes, I, Gayle, started several clothing fads in the late 80s / early 90s. How do I know this? Because I was doing these things before they were cool.  People admired me.  People wanted to look like me. People wanted to be like me.  Heck, people wanted to BE me!*
*Not really.
So, what 80s and 90s trends can you thank me for?

//  cuffed jean shorts //

It’s true!  I cuffed my jeans FIRST.  It was for function.  I did it because my mom made me buy them long enough to be past my fingertips.  Our principal, Dr. Lewis, was a stickler about making sure girls’ shorts were long enough.  It was her vendetta or something.

Anyway, I started cuffing my shorts so they would be shorter at school, but I could still leave the house and pass my mom’s inspection on my way out the door.  Suddenly?  Everyone else was doing it too!

// keds //

Along with rolled socks, yes.  Keds.  With puffed paint.  In fact, it was weird to me when Keds with the pre-drawn pictures on them came out, because I had been drawing on my shoes for years.  The pre-drawn shoes seemed soooooo unnecessary.
I think Keds must have been profiling me, because they kept stealing my ideas.  Colored Keds?  Patterned Keds?  It’s called Crayola marker, people!

// adidas sambas //

Did I play soccer?

Why yes, but for only one season in kindergarten, and I spent the whole season wandering around the field, or asking “where do I stand again???”  Let’s just say, when someone asked me what team I played for, while I was wearing these, I had no idea what they were talking about.  Indoor soccer?  Didn’t even know that was a thing.
Admittedly, I didn’t really learn how to pick out cute shoes until college.  Whoops.

// vests //

Mmmm hmmm!  Vests.  They were out, they were in, they were out, they were in . . . and who do you think wore them the entire time she was in elementary school?!  Yours truly!

// scrunchies //

My mom and my aunt started making these for my cousin and me when we were barely old enough to say scrunchie.  I’m sure they just had spare fabric or something.  They were always trying to find new uses for things.  All I know is, I had a billion scrunchies before you could even buy one. 🙂

//  //  //  //  //  //  //  //  //  //

Okay, so I didn’t really start these trends — it was just happy coincidence.  In all honestly, I spent a lot of my childhood / adolescence / teen years trying to figure out how to be like everyone else, to fit in, to be accepted.  It took me a long time to realize this simple truth:
God made me to be Gayle.  Nothing more, nothing less.
He knit me together in the womb, and knows my inmost being.  {Psalm 139:13}

He has plans for me.  {Jeremiah 29:11}

He knows my needs.  {Philippians 4:19}

The hairs on my head are numbered.  {Matthew 10:30}

He knows what I am going to say before I even say it.  {Psalm 139:4}
He has called me by name, I am His.  {Isaiah 43:1}

I don’t need to look, act, dress, walk, or talk like anyone else but ME.  Neither do you!  You were created with a purpose.  YOU, yes YOU were!  Not, everyone else except for you.  But truly, you.  The Lord of the universe — Who created the moon and the stars and caused the oceans to have tide and the sun to shine — created you exactly how He wants you.  There is nothing about you that is a mistake.
We don’t need to “fit in” with the world.  Though so much of the time we feel as though we do, that’s not your purpose, friends!  Take a moment to celebrate with me — celebrate the love that God put into you, when He created you!  You are no more or no less — no matter how many scrunchies you owned, He loves you the same!

I am thankful that Lauren invited me to come share with y’all today.  I would love for you to follow along with me, so please stop by and visit.
Be blessed and be a blessing!
