As Coffee & Conversation is no longer producing new topics to share, I thought this week would be a great opportunity to answer another set of questions and go a little deeper. Sweet Ginny over at A Modern Commonplace Book tagged me in this “Get To Know Me” post and I thought it would be a fun thing to share. I have always enjoyed answering these type questions as the stages in my life change over the years – it’s always fun to look back and see my responses and how they have (or haven’t) changed with each shift in season. The challenge was to pick six, but I wanted to do all of them – call me an over achiever. So grab a cup of your favorite coffee, and get to know the girl behind the blog a bit better…
Is this how you imagined your life would be?
Well, if we’re honest, yes and no. I always imagined graduating from college, getting married, buying a house, and starting a family. But I never pictured the way that would all come to be. If you would have asked me when I was little, I wouldn’t have told you I was going to go to Auburn and become a Behavior Analyst – I would have told you I was going to be a vet and live in Texas. I was just a tad off there. But, the one constant in what I imagined is that I was happy, and that holds true today. Is my life exactly how I pictured it to be? Not completely. And I am so very thankful for that. If it was, I would never had experienced all the wonderful things I have thus far. It is immensely fuller than I could have imagined in my limited understanding as a kid. I am so blessed to be living the life I have and wouldn’t ask for it to be any other way.
Name one good deed you did that went unseen.
Now, I left this question, not because I wanted to answer it per say, but rather I wanted to give my opinion on the matter. I am not one to toot my own horn, and really despise questions like this or ones where you have to talk about how awesome you are. It is my belief that a lot of what we do for others will largely go unnoticed by those we are serving. And also, that even if the person we did the good for acknowledges or recognizes our deed, it may not be broadcast for the world to see. And that’s ok. We shouldn’t be doing good seeking reward for it. We should be doing so simply because we are called to love our neighbors and serve them.
What’s your drink of choice when out with girlfriends?
I am a sucker for margaritas when it comes to a good girls night out! But honestly, most of my “solid” girl time is spent over coffee or popsicles these days. I will say my drink choices don’t really vary with people – just on what kind of night it is.
How did your blog come about?
I love to write. And keep a record of the things I love, so it seemed only fitting with technology booming to keep an electronic journal of sorts. I’ve been “blogging” since before it was cool. I had a few different ones before this one when I was in high school and undergrad, and then created this space after graduating undergrad. Then in 2013 I entered into true “blogland” and here I am today! Read more about me, see why this space exists, and what “Simply Free” really means while you’re here also.
What hobbies do you have that you don’t mention on your blog?
Not really, I’ve talk about crafting, reading, etc. but perhaps one area I haven’t mentioned as much would be some of my favorite TV shows and movies that I rather enjoy. I will watch all day marathons of America’s Next Top Model & What Not To Wear while I’m doing stuff around the house on days off. There are other shows I watch with the husband, but these are just my guilty pleasures. I am rather obsessed with Harry Potter & the Hunger Games. Way more than I should be. But let’s just be honest, it’s better than Twlight, right?
What do you love about yourself?
Like I said earlier, I generally hate these kinds of questions. However, something that I am continually working on is seeing the good…in everyone. And that includes me. I know this sounds so silly, but I have always loved my eyes. They are blue, but they have this little bit of gold around the pupils that somewhere along the way were dubbed as my “sunflowers”. They change colors depending on what I’m wearing and can go from a soft tealish green to bright cobalt blue. I think my eyes say a lot about one of the things I take the most pride in as well, yet in a very different way. I tend to be pretty observant and I love that because I always want to make sure everything is perfectly in order whether it’s work, decor, whatever. I love to be organized and being observant really aides in that process.
If money were no question, I’d purchase…
A lot of things. I’d pay off our mortgage. Get my mom the house she wants. Clear any debt my family members had accrued. And ensure my future children would be provided for and have an opportunity to receive the education they desired. I would also serve others in the way it’s always the hardest to provide. I’d take the trip abroad to be in missions. I’d purchase enough food for those in need that cross my path. Enough clothing for those who were lacking. I’d spend my money on helping those in need, not perpetuating those in want.
What’s your biggest struggle in life?
While I have touched on struggles before, and what seems to be a daily challenge, I’d say my biggest struggle in life is trying to truly serve all those around me. To share Christ’s love in EVERY opportunity, not just when I feel like it. To hold my tongue when I want to say something I know is not uplifting. To seek the good in others, and draw it out of them. To live each day to the fullest. Taking one day at a time…if just for today. It is a daily battle to follow after the heart of my King, not sub coming to my human nature, and not waiting until tomorrow to show those around me how much they mean to me.
Name something you’ve learned about yourself that has surprised you.
I am constantly surprised about the fact that I love fashion, accessories, shopping, ANTM, Say Yes to the Dress, and a lot of other very girly things. I used to always say I wasn’t a girly-girl (and I’m still not really) but I made the common mistake of assuming that if you liked sports, or more, could play sports then you were a tomboy & couldn’t be cute, fashionable, or really even girly at all. I assumed that because I loved and excelled in athletics and all things outdoors, that I just simply wasn’t pretty enough to truly enjoy fashion and the rest. And I assumed that others thought the same – so for me, for a while, I dappled in trying to find my “style” since I figured people didn’t really care anyways because I was the “athletic girl” so I wasn’t suppose to dress cute anyhow. After splitting votes in high school for most athletic and most fashionable I decided that maybe you can be more than one thing after all despite the stereotypes. After all, I’d spent my whole life a nerd who played sports, so why stop now? 😉
So, now I tag YOU next! I would love to get to know you better 🙂 Comment below with your link if you’ve answered these (or other) questions to share!
