A few weeks ago we traveled to the Loveliest Village on the Plains to see our beloved Tigers play some football. We tailgated with friends, ventured around campus, watched the game, and had an all around delightful time. The hardest part about tailgating when you have to travel two hours, is making sure you have something that doesn’t need to be heated, or stay refrigerated for too long. Before we get to our delicious tailgating treat, here are some pictures from game day 🙂
As I was saying, we thought of cookies, but then we thought of something that would be easier to “munch” on throughout the day – Chex Mix. Now of course you can buy the bags, but in an effort to continue to make everything as homemade as possible, forgoing as many preservatives as possible, we opted to make our own and turned to the Pioneer Woman for a bit of inspiration. Because, let’s be honest, she knows how to rock some homemade recipes that are always better than the store bought version. We tweaked it a bit, and may add some things in the future, but here is our new go to recipe for a simple, munchable, treat.
Ingredients:
- 3 cups Corn Chex
- 3 cups Wheat Chex
- can omit this & do equal parts Corn & Rice Chex
- 3 cups Rice Chex
- 2 cups Pretzel Sticks
- 2 cups Mixed Nuts (salted or unsalted)
- 1 stick butter (real butter – not margarine)
- 3 Tablespoons Worcestershire Sauce
- 12 dashes Tabasco Sauce
- or less or you’re not into spicyness
- 3 cloves fresh garlic (mashed)
- or use 1 teaspoon powdered garlic
- 1 teaspoon Lawry’s Seasoned Salt
- 1/4-1/2 teaspoon onion powder
Directions:
- Preheat the oven to 250 degrees
- Pour Chex into a large mixing bowl.
- Add in pretzel sticks and nuts.
- In a microwave-safe bowl, add remaining ingredients and microwave until butter is melted.
- Stir together and pour over cereal mixture, stirring as you go.
- Transfer mix onto two baking sheets, and bake 1 hour and 15 minutes, stirring every 15 minutes.
- Let cool and store in an airtight container.
- Share with friends, and enjoy!
