If you have ever spent any time in our house or anywhere on this blog, you’ll know we have an affinity for antique items and for giving “old” things a new purpose and life. For example, our latest project.
So when the in-laws were cleaning out the attic and found this lovely little ottoman that had seen better days, I knew it would be a perfect addition to the living room as a foot prop or an extra seat for the younger generation. Al it needed was a new seat so i was eager to tackle this project. It was quite quick an easy once I finally found the materials, and now we have a lovely new addition for under $15 that has a fun story as well!
Here’s what you’ll need:
- a piece of durable wood for the new seat (we had extra laying around)
- foam for the seat (you can get this cheaper if you look!)
- fabric of your choice (we picked a neutral burlap)
- staple gun ( to attach the “cushion” to the board)
- screwdriver & screws (to attach to the base)
How to make it:
- cut the board to fit the top of the base
- cut the foam the size of the board & the thickness you want(I used two pieces to achieve the width so don’t worry if it’s not all one piece)
- lay the foam on top of your fabric, then put the board down on top
- fold fabric over to envelope the foam and the board to determine cut length (you want about 2 inches on the board to be able to pull tight and staple to hold)
- cut fabric to desired size
- pull fabric tight and staple onto board starting with sides and leaving corners for last
- once fabric is stapled on, lay the base on top of the board, and screw in the base to the board
- flip over, and enjoy your new ottoman!
