As you have seen in our house tour (which will be resuming shortly!) I love to find unique items that are both practical and support a cause when shopping for home decor. So when I found Uncommon Goods, I was super excited. I’d been looking for some items to complete our library at home as well as my office at work so their bookends and desk accessories appealed to me quickly. I’ve definitely got my eyes on some other bookends, and you can see some of my favorite here. And when it comes to desk accessories, they have some clever items to keep you organized that you should check out here. We also have a few friends buying houses, so their housewarming gifts were spot on for picking fun items for their new places. See all of their fun gifts here. These adorable bike bookends were the perfect addition to keep our books in place, so I knew I just had to have them!
Aside from their unique and adorable products, I really like what UncommonGoods is all about as a company.
Founded in 1999 and headquartered in Brooklyn, New York, UncommonGoods is a privately-owned retailer that endeavors to feature unique designs and handcrafted gifts created in harmony with the environment and without harm to animals or people. It’s a part of their mission to support and provide a platform for artists and designers; in fact, half of what they sell is made by hand and made here in the USA, and about one-third of the entire collection incorporates recycled and/or upcycled materials.
Not to mention they are a B Corporation. B Corporations use the power of business to solve social and environmental problems. The B seal means that we meet a rigorous standard on a wide range of issues, including wage levels, environmental impact, and giving back to our community.
As an independently-owned business, they also have the freedom to support causes they believe in and positively impact the world. With every purchase, they proudly to donate $1 to your choice of our notfor-profit partner organizations, and since starting their Better to Give program 15 years ago, they have donated over $1,000,000 dollars to charities around the world, including these three below:
RAINN: The Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network runs more than 1,100 rape crisis centers across the United States as the largest anti-sexual violence organization. Find out more about what they do here.
Women for Women International: Women for Women International provides survivors of war and other refugee women the tools and resources to move from crisis and poverty to stable self-sufficiency. Find out more about what they do here.
Reach Out & Read: Reach Out & Read is a network of thousands of doctors and nurses working to promote early literacy, language skills, and school readiness to young children in all 50 states. Find out more about what they do here.
So not only do they have unique products, they are helping to make the world a better place, one sale at a time!
