If you’ve been here for a bit, you know that our dog, Riley, is an integral part of our family! So when it comes to dog treats, we like to make sure she has some healthy options as well! I’ve always tried to purchase ones that had simple ingredients, but the husband found a recipe for us to make. It is very easy, and quick! I love using my kitchen aid mixer, but most times that means making cookies for us, which is not so helpful when you’re on a diet (whomp whomp). Also, homemade dog treats make for a good thank you for friends who are equally puppy obsessed 😉
And when I say simple, these were seriously super easy. A tad messy, but super easy. And Riley LOVED them. She is a huge fan of peanut butter, and has had pumpkin treats before as well, so I knew this would be tasty. I used a penguin cookie cutter because that was the one we had most similar in size to her usual treats, but you can certainly use any cookie cutter you’ve got. Just make sure to put the finished project in the puppy’s jar 😉 I want to get a bone cookie cutter for next time! I think we rolled our dough a bit thin, so we’ll likely make them a little more fluffy next time as well. But, this recipe is a keeper, so I have no doubt it’ll be on repeat.
- 2/3 cup pumpkin puree
- 1/4 cup peanut butter
- 2 large eggs
- 3 cups flour, or more, as needed (can use AP or whole wheat)
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat & set aside.
- In the bowl of an electric mixer (use a paddle attachment) beat pumpkin puree, peanut butter and eggs on medium-high until well combined (about 1-2 minutes)
- Gradually add 2 1/2 cups flour at low speed, beating just until incorporated.
- Add an additional 1/4 cups flour at a time just until the dough is no longer sticky.
- Working on a lightly floured surface, knead the dough 3-4 times until it comes together.
- Using a rolling pin, roll the dough to about 1/4-inch thickness.
- Using cookie cutters, cut out desired shapes and place onto the prepared baking sheet.
- Place into oven and bake until the edges are golden brown (about 20-25 minutes)
- Let cool completely.
