Y’all it is blazing hot here in Bham, and we are always trying to think of things to do that don’t involve being outside or playing in the pool. Here are 5 ways to beat the summer heat indoors:
Visit a pet store. It’s like it’s own tiny zoo! With AC. A major bonus. There are always fish tanks, birds, lizards, and sometimes even puppies and kittens up for adoption. Plus, people always bring their own pets inside, so it’s great exposure for kids to be around animals. Or, on more special occasions, go to the aquarium!Take a walk around the mall before it opens. When I worked at the mall in high school, I always thought it was so silly when I’d see these little old ladies power walking with their little fanny packs. But they were so smart! It is way to hot to walk outside most days, so a nice big loop with AC? Yes please. Throw in some window shopping in the process? You bet.
We had some time to kill after church but before meeting family for a rare lunch out so we ventured to one of the nearby malls, and it was perfect. With no crowds, little ones can take their time walking around, and escalator trips can be continuous.

Go to lunch where there’s an indoor playground. (Like anyone seriously needs the extra boost to hit the nearest Chick-Fil-A?) We rarely eat out, but the occasional fast food excursion is always limited to good ol’ chicky as we call it. The indoor play area is the perfect place for little ones to get their energy out and stay cool!
Make a tent or use a teepee to make indoor play extra special. While usually this is what we think about for rainy days, it’s equally as fun for those super hot days where being outside is simply unbearable.
Visit a kids science center. Ok, so I know this one costs money. BUT, places like the McWane Center (if you’re in Bham) are just too cool not to make the list. There are so many great activities and learning opportunities, and the kiddos always have so. much. fun. Definitely something to add in to the rotation for special occasions instead of an outdoor activity like the zoo or when family is in town!
