If you’re like me, a daily cup of coffee is a must. And some days calls for multiple cups before I even make it to the office! And if we’re really being honest, some days necessitate constant refills fueled by my trusty Keurig places ever so conveniently right beside my desk. It’s not a problem if I don’t mind it, right?
I digress! While my love for coffee spans the warmth, taste & aroma, the one thing I’m not a fan of is the stains that can be left behind from constantly drinking these darker brews. And one thing I’ve noticed is that over time, those stains can really start to take a toll on the whiteness of your smile. Now, I am certainly not thinking of giving up my favorite brew, BUT, definitely want to keep my teeth white and my smile prominent. Because after all, a smile is by far your best accessory!
While coffee give me energy (can I get an amen working mamas?!) it’s my smile that gives me the confidence in the office and at home so I want to make sure and take care of it.
So I was naturally thrilled when I discovered Smile Brilliant. I had been toying with the idea of whitening my teeth at home, but honestly, I didn’t even know where to start with so many options, and a huge range in pricing. Would the cheap strips work? Should I get it from my dentist? Are my teeth too sensitive to begin with? Are they really that bad? You get the point.
But that’s what I love about this system. It is so simple. Smile Brilliant sent me the starter kit to try, and let me tell you, at first, I was skeptical. How can it really be this stress free? The best part is that I didn’t even have to leave the house. They sent me the guide to make the molds, and then I sent them back out so they could make my customized trays. Which is HUGE in my book, because I have a really small mouth, and other trays are always way too big and make me gag. No bueno.
Now, let’s get real for a second, while simple, making the mold was an ordeal because of said small mouth. I totally understand the insert and the mold need to span all mouth sizes, but someone could have prepared me for the experience. So I am going to share with you! When I tell you I produced so. much. saliva. I am far from kidding. And I pretty much gagged the whole 2 minutes I had to keep it in. (The things we do for coffee, am I right?) Now I say this not as a deterrent, but simply as a warning to prepare you. It only lasts a few minutes overall so it’s totally a non issue – just be near a sink if you’ve got a strong gag reflex or lots of spit.
Once I got the customized trays back, they were so perfect and tiny, and extremely lightweight. I seriously would forget that I had them in. Everyone recommends whitening before bed, and I completely concur. For me, it has been the most perfect time to do it! I just pop them in with the whitening gel after I tuck little miss in, and have them in while I tidy up the house and work on school or content for the blog. After some time, I switch out the whitening gel for the desensitizing gel and finish up my tasks before taking out the trays and heading to bed. It’s really a quick process, and I don’t even notice they’re in.
But what about sensitivity you ask? Well this is something I was worried about as well. But the desensitizing gel and timing are really key in this process! I started off whitening daily, with longer whitening times than desensitizing times, and I started to feel some tooth sensitivity the next day. So I tweaked my times a bit, having the desensitizing gel time longer than the whitening time, and moved to every other day and it’s been perfect. Everyone will be different, but don’t skip the desensitizing gel because it makes all the difference in reducing next day sensitivity!
Aside from this, just like consistency in my coffee intake is key for being alert, consistency in whitening is a must. Daily or every other day will get you to your goal. Those stains didn’t come from one latte, so don’t expect one night to bring those pearly whites back either. But the great thing about having this product at home is that you can continue until you reach your goal, then save some to use a later time to refreshen those pearly whites.
