The gals from the Marketing Arm knew what they were doing when they planned this trip. A few days on the front end to get acclimated from the jet lag, and a few days after so as not to deflate too quickly from the pinnacle of the experience. Wednesday was packed full of guided tour with Jonathan, followed by lunch and exploration of the market. Post updo hair and all. We ended the night with dinner & a show, and a bit of bar hopping as well, but that’s for another post π
St. Paul’s Cathedral
St. Paul’s Cathedral was quite massive in its stature. Itβs simply gorgeous, and the history and details are pretty interesting. Especially when we went down to the underground crypt where several people are buried and learned of a small chapel. Evidently in this chapel only certain people can be married and itβs quite the honor. This was so odd to us as there were no windows no natural light low ceilings and several tombstones! It seems as though a place of primarily death would not be a place where you want to start your future life, but hey, to each their own. The view from the walking bridge was pretty spectacular as well! Definitely worth the adventure there!
Westminster Abbey
Westminster Abbey was just fabulous. The architecture was extravagant. While we were there there, was a small service that was going on and communion. Now our little group all met through the same church. So hearing the liturgy and the message they are as we walked through was rather powerful. It was absolutely fascinating to see each of the segments of burials whether monarchy or scientists or literary authors as well. To view the tombs of such geniuses as Stephen Hawking and Isaac Newton was pretty moving. Jonathan (our tour guide) of course filled in all the gaps and relayed a delightful historical account as he took us through each wing. I highly recommend making this a must see on your list next time youβre in London!
Borough Market
Borough Market might have been one of my favorite spots that wasn’t of historical value, but more of somewhere I wanted to visit daily. When we lived in Mobile, the husband and I would venture to the market every weekend where there were shops and produce and all sorts of incredible people watching. Borough Market was that only better! We had originally been slated to go on Monday, but it wasn’t open, so I’m glad we were able to fit it in later in the week! We sipped on mulled wine (well, I sipped on champagne & everyone else sipped on mulled wine because I’m allergic to red wine & champagne is delightful) while we explored the booths and fresh offerings of the market. After a lunch of the garlic prawn wrap (seriously delicious) we opted for gelato, because gelato is always a good idea.
We took the tube back to the hotel and readied ourselves for the night, which was the most perfect bittersweet ending to the trip!
