#ELBookClub March 2021 pick
Wow. Just wow.
I’ve had this book on my list to read for a while now and I was super excited that this came up for this month’s book club. Anxiety is something that I have dealt with for a long time, but it wasn’t until 2019 that I started to surrender to the recognition of that. I’ve also always known and joked about having OCD, but as I’ve gotten older these tendencies have become stronger as well. Being in the field of psychology I’ve always known cognitively that there is absolutely nothing wrong with either of these disorders or the treatments for them, however when it’s personal, and especially as a one, you feel like you’re a failure.
Reading through the pages it was a constant echo of my own thoughts. A reminder that I’m not alone and that I can in fact change my thought processes as well.
Now I truly don’t believe that everything is “all in your head” and you can just “think that or this thought “. However Jennie does a wonderful example of relating this to scripture and filling our minds with his truth rather than the devil’s lies. This is certainly where I think that we are in control of what we allow into our minds and our hearts. So often, what we say to ourselves that we would never say in a million years to the people closest to us, much less to a stranger.
Jennie does a beautiful job of providing alternative phrases that are truths for us to remind ourselves in the mitts of situation where we are deeply entrenched by anxiety. For me, this is a daily event where I am combating the thoughts in my head and filling them with God’s truth. For me, the more I’m in His word and when my mind is filled with scripture, the less anxious I become.
I cannot say enough wonderful things about this book, about Jennie’s heart, and about the transformative power of prayer.
